Election Day 2004

I'm not one to focus much attention on 'The Religious,' but I was completely out of work,
depressed and quite anxious, and listening to the election returns of the presidential contest
(between John Kerry and George W Bush) as I rather quickly did this painting. Bush finally WON
the election (although NOT by popular vote) and I believe the country gave a collective sigh
of desolation and dismay. The painting is about someone who has a cross to bear ~ in this
case, I believe I was drawing from an art history tome, a painting of St. Stephen or St Andrew
who offered to bear the cross for Jesus, on his way to Golgotha. And I had to conclude that
after losing all credibility with the world, involving us in not one but two Vietnam Style Wars
(Iraq and Afghanistan), because of Bush, we must all bear another cross for four more years.
