Completed in the early '90s, this watercolor of my (then, very young!) son playing on the beach in Grand Marais, Minnesota, was put on consignment in a gallery...about 80 miles from our home. The owner of the gallery placed it in the front window her shop, and the sun ~over a very short time ~ burned out all the yellows and reds. When I came to see how my work was doing, the painting was all blue. Those blues are the stainer colors! So there's a lesson for all you watercolor artists out there: Keep all light (that has ultraviolet rays) well away from your work. rcg
THANKS so much Herr Feldrand for all your beautiful comments on the two paintings AND a photo also! WOW... You are too kind. Hope you're busy with your music... dick g
yes, very busy with music... since about one year the songs come pouring out of me like water, almost frightning sometimes... i have a friend who is co-owner of a little studio and we recently started recording my new stuff... but dates are rare and progress is MUCH to slow, haha - i catch myself becoming impatient to have audible and submittable results... you are most welcome...
WOW, you are really bearing musical fruit my friend. For my part, I shall be on the radio rather soon ~ I'll post a link. Minnesota Public Radio has a DJ who invited me to be on her show called Music with Minnesotans...so I was taped during the first week in April. It's a half-hour interview, playing my play-list faves (they missed my two favorites)...but you'll hear me comment on my driving a school bus IN WHICH I STREAM CLASSICAL MUSIC! Very Daring, dude.I'll keep you informed! dg
This is still a piece of true art even after being exposed to the sun, Richard.
Looks like our kids are about the same age, my daughter was born in 1990.
Your story makes me think of what happened to ME. There was a new gallery in Frankfurt (I live in Germany) looking for good watercolours to hang on their walls.
I selected my best art work, 8 watercolours, medium to large size and brought them there. They said I should come back after 6 months to pick them up.
When I went back 6 months later, the place was closed down and nobody knew where they had gone.
I never saw my paintings again. And didnt have any photographs of them.
I only just started to take pictures of them, have at least another 20 painting which I can't find, real good ones, but dont recall where they might be. I moved several times and somehow must have lost them in boxes that werent picked up...
..from now on I will take a picture of each painting to have memories of it. You are a great artist and seem to make a living with your art.
Please write back about the water effect. LG from Germany. Esther
I went through that same issue with a gallery here in Minneapolis. I just left them alone for maybe two years, went back to pick them up and 'several' were un-accounted for!!!! They paid me, when I became very persistent. I have learned not to like galleries. In fact, some of the very worst people I have known have run galleries. Now, about the water effect (and by the way I'm sorry for your w/c loss. Best to take highly resolved shots of them...and sign iron-clad contracts with galleries. They're all struggling financially, and many are totally unscrupulous. ) I used on that w/c of my son, probably some clear wax candle (wax resists water of course...and probably some liquid masking fluid. I don't use either much any more. And I paint VERY intuitively. I don't like to faithfully copy a photo. Just feel my way through. Thanks for you lovely comments. Regards: Dick G
